The Paris-based fashion house has established a permanent retail presence in South Africa through a three-year partnership with Yawa Africa, bringing its colour-driven collections and luxury sportswear aesthetic to Sandton City.
Casablanca, the luxury fashion label founded by Charaf Tajer in 2018, has opened its first dedicated South African retail space at Diamond Walk in Sandton City, Johannesburg, marking a new stage in the brand’s expansion into the local market.
The opening, announced on 21 October 2026, follows three years of collaboration with Yawa Africa, a retail platform focused on connecting international luxury fashion brands with consumers in South Africa and the wider African market. Yawa Africa’s retail portfolio includes labels such as AMIRI, Palm Angels, Fear of God and Daily Paper. The platform was launched in 2020 in association with musician Black Coffee and Themba Yawa.
The Johannesburg store provides a physical retail presence for a fashion house whose identity sits between luxury ready-to-wear, sportswear and contemporary resort dressing.
A design language built around colour and print
Founded by French-Moroccan designer Charaf Tajer, Casablanca draws on his cultural background, travel, sporting references and the visual language of leisure. Since its establishment, the label has developed a recognisable aesthetic characterised by saturated colours, illustrated prints, silk garments and relaxed tailoring.
Silk shirts featuring elaborate landscapes, architectural motifs and decorative artwork have become among the house’s most recognisable products. These sit alongside textured knitwear, coordinated sets, tailored pieces and elevated sportswear, positioning the brand between traditional luxury dressing and more casual contemporary wardrobes.
Rather than relying exclusively on conventional luxury codes such as restrained palettes and minimal branding, Casablanca frequently uses colour and graphic composition as central elements of its collections. Its designs incorporate references to tennis, resort culture and international travel, with garments often presented as part of a wider visual narrative.
The label has also expanded beyond its original menswear offering into womenswear, footwear, accessories, jewellery and leather goods.
Yawa Africa and the local retail strategy
The South African opening reflects the role of specialist retail platforms in introducing international fashion labels to new markets. Through its partnership with Casablanca, Yawa Africa has spent three years developing the brand’s local presence ahead of the establishment of a dedicated store.
The distinction between an international brand being available through selected retailers and operating a dedicated retail space is significant. A standalone boutique gives a label greater control over its product presentation, store environment and the way its collections are experienced by customers.
For Casablanca, the Sandton City location provides a permanent point of access to its collections within one of Johannesburg’s established luxury retail destinations. For Yawa Africa, the opening adds another international designer label to a portfolio spanning contemporary luxury and premium streetwear.
The development also places Casablanca within a broader local retail environment in which international brands are building direct relationships with South African consumers through specialised retail partnerships.
The store and the latest collections
The new boutique translates elements of Casablanca’s visual identity into its retail environment. According to opening coverage, the interior combines curved architectural forms with evergreen and ivory finishes, alongside accents of yellow, rose, sky blue and red. Sculptural displays and a mosaic monogram reference North African craftsmanship.
The store opened with the brand’s Pre-Fall and Autumn/Winter 2026 collections, which draw on imagery associated with Egypt, including ancient architecture, desert landscapes and café culture. The collections combine these references with tailoring, eveningwear, silk prints and contemporary sportswear.
The presentation illustrates how Casablanca uses destinations and cultural references as recurring elements of its design process, extending the narrative beyond individual garments into campaign imagery and retail spaces.
A new point of access to the brand
Casablanca’s Johannesburg opening establishes its first dedicated retail location in South Africa and formalises a local presence developed in partnership with Yawa Africa.
Founded in 2018, the label has built an international profile through its combination of French tailoring traditions, Moroccan influences, vivid prints and luxury leisurewear. Its arrival in a dedicated South African retail space adds another international fashion house to Johannesburg’s premium retail offering.
The opening’s longer-term significance will depend on the brand’s ability to build sustained demand in the local market, alongside the performance of its retail partner and the wider luxury sector.
Casablanca is located at Diamond Walk, Sandton City, Johannesburg.
