The collaboration between South African designer Wanda Lephoto and Bash’s in-house brand Canvas Studios highlights how independent creativity can reach a wider audience through established retail platforms
South African fashion continues to find new ways to connect independent creativity with the commercial retail market. The collaboration between Johannesburg-based designer Wanda Lephoto and Bash’s in-house brand Canvas Studios offers an interesting example of how these worlds can intersect.
Launched on the 13th of October 2026, the Wanda Lephoto x Canvas Studios collection marks the designer’s first move into womenswear, bringing his distinctive approach to storytelling, identity and cultural expression to a new audience.
But beyond the clothing, the collaboration also highlights how Bash and its parent company, The Foschini Group (TFG), are using their retail infrastructure to create opportunities for local designers while developing their own-brand offering.
A designer with a story to tell
Wanda Lephoto has spent years developing a design identity rooted in African identity, cultural history and personal storytelling. His work explores how fashion can challenge conventional representations of Africa while creating new ways of thinking about heritage and contemporary identity.
His recognition at the 2025 Twyg Sustainable Fashion Awards, where he received the Changemaker Award and Trans-seasonal Design Award, further established his presence in South African fashion. Bash sponsored the Changemaker Award, creating a connection between the retailer and the designer before the collection took shape.
The new range takes his creative practice into womenswear, drawing inspiration from the memory of his late sister, who appeared in a fashion advertisement in the 1990s. Through this personal reference, Lephoto considers beauty, memory and the woman she might have become.
The result brings an established creative perspective into a new category while retaining the storytelling that distinguishes his work.

Enter Canvas Studios
Introduced in November 2023, Canvas Studios is Bash’s in-house fashion and lifestyle brand, built around individuality, creativity and self-expression.
The brand gives Bash an opportunity to develop its own product identity rather than relying exclusively on labels created by other businesses. Collaborations allow it to introduce different creative perspectives while maintaining a recognisable brand environment.
For Lephoto, Canvas Studios provides a platform through which his designs can reach customers who might not otherwise encounter his independent label. For Bash, the collection introduces a distinctive South African design voice into its own-brand offering.
Making design more accessible
The collection includes graphic T-shirts priced at R499, gingham skirts at R699 and a lined car coat at R1,799, offering different entry points into the range.
Accessibility in fashion is about more than price alone. It also concerns where customers can discover products, how easily they can shop and whether distinctive design is available beyond specialist boutiques.
Bash’s established online shopping platform gives the collection an opportunity to reach consumers beyond the designer’s existing audience. The range is also described in product listings as locally made and produced in small runs, connecting the collaboration to conversations about local manufacturing and creative production.
How the collaboration benefits the designer
For independent designers, production, marketing, distribution and customer acquisition can be challenging to manage independently.
Working with an established retailer offers access to an existing shopping platform, customer base and fulfilment capabilities. It also creates room for creative experimentation, as Lephoto’s move into womenswear demonstrates.
The partnership brings together two different strengths: the designer’s creative vision and the retailer’s ability to present products to a broader audience.
Why Bash and TFG are well positioned to pursue this model
Bash launched in March 2023 as a consolidated digital fashion and lifestyle platform, bringing multiple TFG brands together within one shopping environment.
This infrastructure gives collaborations an established route to market. Rather than building a separate sales platform for every designer, Bash can draw on its existing digital environment and the wider group’s retail capabilities.
Canvas Studios adds another dimension by allowing Bash to develop its own-brand identity while collaborating with creatives whose perspectives bring something distinctive to its collections.
TFG’s Sustainable Design Incubator also reflects the group’s engagement with local design talent through mentorship and commercial development. Together, these initiatives illustrate different ways established retailers can connect creative development with the business of fashion.
A meeting of creativity and retail reach
The Wanda Lephoto x Canvas Studios collection illustrates how independent design and mainstream retail can work together.
For Lephoto, it opens a new chapter in his design practice. For Canvas Studios, it introduces a distinctive creative voice. For Bash and TFG, it provides an opportunity to strengthen their own-brand offering while bringing South African design to a broader audience.
Ultimately, the collaboration is about more than a new collection. It shows how an established fashion platform can provide a space for independent creativity to reach new customers, while giving a retailer new ways to connect its products with the stories and perspectives shaping South African fashion.
